Big Sox Fan

Becky was a baseball fan going way back, but her love for the game took a big leap forward when her oldest son started playing seriously at the age of 6.  Andy became a White Sox fan (like his father) and Becky became a ravenous fan herself.  Andy’s brother and sister also became big Sox fans as well.

Over the years, we went to many games as a family.  We sat in various places in the old Comiskey Park and later in the new US Cellular Field (The Cell).  In fact, we went to the last night game at old Comiskey Park.  It was a night to remember for the ages.

We eventually found that the Sox would release tickets that we being saved for the opposing team on the morning of the game.  We would go to the Sox/Bulls Training Facility in Lisle and get great tickets.  Usually, these were right behind home plate, about 20 rows up.  On one occasion when the Sox were playing the Angels, we had the entire Orlando Cabrera clan in front of us; we did not appreciate this Cabrera guy then, but we felt better later when he joined the Sox as our shortstop.

2005 was a special year for the Sox when they won the World Championship.  I remember some special games where Becky, Matt and I would watch the World Series at Shoeless Joe’s bar in Rosemont.  Yes, that one great inning where El Duque comes in with the bases loaded and no outs; and, he shuts them down without scoring.  Great Times!!

In more recent years, we did not go to the games as often.  It was hard.  The Sox did have a special entrance for wheelchairs and this was helpful.  But, such a trip like this was getting harder and harder.  Still, Becky remained a die-hard fan to the very end.
